The Cullinan Diamond Mine, originally owned by Sir Thomas Cullinan in 1903, has given the world some of the most remarkable stones ever discovered. Located in the Victorian town named after it’s most famous resident, Cullinan is a breathtaking 45-minute drive from South Africa’s capital, Pretoria, and an hour-and-a-half from the City of Gold, Johannesburg.
The famous mine is the world’s main source for rare blue diamonds. Owned by a three way partnership consortium, lead by London-listed group Petra Diamonds, black economic empowerment group Thembinkosi Mining Investments and Saudi-based investment company Al Rajhi Holdings, the Cullinan Diamond Mine is expected to produce one million carats per year over the next 20 to 40 years – making it the second largest deposit in the world.
Historically, the Cullinan Diamond Mine has generated 25% of the worlds diamonds over 400 carats. The famous landmark is the source of the most famous diamond ever unearthed – the 3 106 carat Cullinan Diamond found in 1905. The stone was so large it was cut into nine major pieces and 96 smaller brilliant cut diamonds. These diamonds have since gone on to create their own legends.

Based in London Theo Laub, chairman of the group – second generation of the Laub diamond family – is a non-executive Director of Motapa Diamonds – a listed resource and diamond mining company. With a PHD in theoretical physics – Cambridge (UK) he has in excess of 35 years of experience in the diamond business. A partner in The Star Diamond Group from 1985 through to 2003, he had the esteemed position of being a DTC Sight holder in South Africa, and London from 1965 and 1985 to 2003.
A close associate with years of affiliated interests, Gary Monnickendam heads Monnickendam Diamonds, the third generation of this London based Diamond Company. With 30 years of experience behind him, he heads the company whose flagship is a branded market dominance in Japan and a presence in Malaysia and Singapore.
Michael Glaser, a Bachelor of arts in International Politics, with GIA qualification has 18 years of international diamond experience. As Managing Director of Star Diamond Company, South Africa from 1993 through 2003, a DTC sight holder, he was responsible for the setting up, the management and the marketing of polished production of SA’s largest diamond cutting factory on the campus of the world famous Cullinan Diamond Mine.
